The sport of rodeo is finally coming into its own. What started in some unknown rancher's back pasture a relatively few years ago as an informal competition without rules, officials or payoffs is now a multi-million dollar sport. For example, bull riding is still a recognized and respected rodeo event, along with bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing. However, a few years ago some rodeo competitors each put up a few dollars (some of it borrowed) and started the separate, still-growing sport of Professional Bull Riders. Recently, ownership of PBR changed hands at a reported price of a hundred million or so dollars.
RODEO!, the Dalhuron Monograph, is intended to serve two purposes: It makes for an interesting evening's read, regardless of any thoughts about rodeo or any connection to it. Then it introduces the reader to many aspects of present-day rodeo, with some history thrown in, together with sources of information, rodeo publications, rodeo organizations, rodeo personnel, rodeo practices, a bit of sex, some comedy and a few pertinent comments from a mythical Joe Roughstock ("Nothing that walks the face of the Earth is better than a good rodeo bullfighter; nothing the good Lord lets live is worse than a bad one. There isn't any in-between.")
