The age of the Anglo-Saxons was barbaric and treacherous. From Egbert in 802 right through to Harold II getting an arrow through his eye in 1066 (so the famous old story goes) a huge twenty-two individual kings ruled either some or all of the Anglo-Saxon world. Compare this with the modern period, when there has been nine British monarchs since George II ascended to the throne in 1760. This gives you some idea of the instability Anglo-Saxon kings had to contend with.
