The proposal of degrowth has achieved some academic respectability in recent years. The aim of the essay is to show the methodological fallacies of such a theory. Scholars as Serge Latouche and Alain Caillé state that social sciences are colonized by economics, based on homo oeconomicus simplification, and that methodological individualism leads to the atomization of society. Neglecting the distinction between rule utilitarianism and act utilitarianism, however, they misconceive the meaning of the tradition of methodological individualism, which is a method to trace back social phenomena and institutions to the actions of individuals.
