DUNCE or DYSLEXIC By Simpleton
The author describes the difficulties he encountered in his early life,
particularly his harsh treatment at school during the 1940's, when Dyslexia
was not a recognised condition. Mistakenly assumed to be simple, he proved
his early detractors wrong as this delightful collection of true stories and
poems will show. The author's evocative memories of boyhood in the
Second World War, together with tales of the larger than life characters in the
small villages around Runfold in Surrey, contrast dramatically with his often
hair-raising later adventures around the world. After serving in the Merchant
Navy, the author joined the Royal Engineers. It was at this time that he
started parachuting before going on to become an accomplished instructor
and joint founder of the British Parachute Association. This was followed by
the creation of the first commercial skydiving centre in the UK and film work
including 'The War Lover' with Steve McQueen and the James Bond film 'You
Only Live Twice'. The author also created a number of successful business
ventures and went on to obtain a commercial balloon pilot's licence. Now
retired, his main interests are his family and writing poetry. This eclectic,
entertaining and thought provoking compendium will appeal to anyone
interested in the halcyon days of post-war England, high adventure, unusual
characters, local history, poetry or the environment. A triumph of ability and
determination over early adversity.
"A poetic autobiographical wonder, this superb
collection is interspersed with the richest of verses,
speaking of romance and love, of odes to his clever,
loving wife as well as outspoken rhymes in defense of
the environment and varied other conditions in the
world that need the voice of an advocate. Notably rising
from the depths of being misunderstood to the heights
of a real life super hero makes this series both poignant
and exhilarating. Fiction is no rival to these true life
stories, a virtual treat for the reader who loves
adventures, with detailed accounts of Bernard's life
circling the globe."
