In 1983 at just 21 years old, Freddie won his first world motorcycling championship. He is the only man to win the 500cc and 250cc Grand Prix titles in the same year. He is regarded as the greatest of all time by many, dubbed ‘The Natural’ by fans and described as ‘the Senna of motorcycle racing’ by MotorSport magazine.

Freddie’s meteoric rise from humble beginnings in Louisiana to the pantheon of greats is the stuff of sporting legend. He was the teenage rookie who beat superstars Barry Sheene and Kenny Roberts. He came of age on the MotoGP circuit, in an historic era of drama and gritty romance, when riders reckoned on three fatalities a year. There were terrifying near misses, smashed bones and spectacular achievements.

But there’s another, very human, side to this story. Freddie is startlingly honest about the difficulties he faced at the end of his racing career - that brutal reality check elite sportsmen are confronted with as they attempt to find their way in a world where they are no longer the best at what they do. Ultimately, he reclaimed his life from a dark place by rediscovering that grit at his core, by reapplying those life skills, by trusting that instinct again.
