George Michael: Personal Life and Controversy
George Michael pushed the boundaries of popular music, writing about lust, sex and the marrow of life. His songs provoked discussions on what is publicly acceptable, normalizing homosexuality and celebrating love and humanity. One of the most striking things about Michael apart from his music was that even when he was struck by disaster, he had the skills to turn it to his advantage.
In 1998, Michael was arrested by the Beverly Hills police for "engaging in a lewd act". He was sentenced to 80 hours of community service. While for other artists this incident would mean the end of their careers, for him it resulted in another top single. After explaining himself on television, he wrote his single Outside. He stated in his interview "I'd service the community, but I already have".
What marked Michael’s life and career was the loss of his first love Anselmo Feleppa to AIDS and his mother to cancer. These two events were life changing for him. He later told The Guardian he suffered from depression during that period, he said “I thought it was punishment because I turned round at the end of Faith and said, You know what? I’m going insane, and I know there’s another way to do this. I thought, is it because I wasn’t grateful enough for my talents? in terms of coming close to saying I don’t want to live, that would have been after my Mum died. I had this overwhelming feeling that the best was behind me”.
In 2006, he was picked up for his cruise on London’s Hampstead Heath. Instead of suing the tabloids, Michael preferred to honestly speak out and say that he enjoyed occasional sex with strangers. He continued being honest and straightforward when asked to explain his four arrests for driving under the influence of drugs. He said: “It’s a hugely shameful thing to have done repeatedly. So, karmically, I felt like I had a bill to pay. I went to prison, I paid my bill”.
George Michael: Death
George Michael died on December 25 2016 at his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, leaving fans worldwide in mourning. He was 53 years old. The statement of his publicist read "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period".
Michael was found dead by his partner Fadi Fawaz, a celebrity hairdresser who began dating Michael five years ago. Fawaz said on Twitter: “ITs a xmas i will never forget finding your partner dead peacefully in bed first thing in the morning.. I will never stop missing you xx”
Michael’s close friends and family reiterated that there were no suspicious circumstances regarding his death “contrary to some reports” while thanking those who, “rightly, have chosen to celebrate his life and legacy at this most distressing of times.”
Michael’s long-term partner Kenny Gross appeared heartbroken. Goss said: “The beautiful memories and music he brought to the world will always be an important part of my life and those who also loved and admired him.”
Michael’s death was unexpected. His friends and fellow musicians were left stunned. Not only he had not been unwell; the star had quite a few plans for 2017. Apart from the documentary he was working on, he was planning to reissue his album Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1.
