Il protagonista di questo racconto breve è George Stransom, un uomo per cui il culto dei morti è molto importante. A loro ha dedicato un altare che visita costantemente e che mantiene sempre illuminato da candele. Solo un defunto non trova spazio sul suo altare: un vecchio amico che gli ha fatto un grave torto e che Stransom non riesce a perdonare.Quando una donna inizia a visitare assiduamente l’altare, Stransom si rende conto di non essere l’unico ad avere questo grande legame con le persone defunte e i due diventano amici. He devotes an altar to their memory and he visits it regularly, keeping it lighted by many candles. There is only one dead that can’t find a place in his altar: an old friend of his who did him a terrible wrong and Stransom can’t forget him.A woman starts visiting the altar regularly and Stransom realizes that he is not the only one to keep a strong relation with the dead people. The two become friends and it’s only later on that Stransom finds out that they have a dead in common and that their feelings towards him are very different
