The late 1970’s through to the mid 1980’s was without doubt one of the greatest periods in the history of Motocross. The riders alone were something really special with the likes of DeCoster, Mikkola, Lackey, Wolsink, Noyce, Malherbe, Carlqvist, Vromans, Geboers and Thorpe, to name but a few. While in the USA, you had Hannah, DiStefano, Sun, Glover, Bell, Weinert, Barnett, Howerton ... the list goes on. And to top it all off it was the 2-stroke era where there was this surge of machine development that moved on at an incredible rate.
I came into Motocross in this period at 18 years old, just your ‘Joe Average’ club racer who had to learn the ins and outs of racing the hard way – there was no beginning at 6 years old and working through the schoolboy ranks like so many others.
If you have read my first book ‘Motocross Rider – 1977’ (Originally in paperback, titled ‘Scrambled Guppy’), you’ll have read about my first amusing accounts of learning to ride a motorcycle, getting a dirt bike and racing my very first event at Blaxhall Pits in Suffolk. But I’ve been asked by many, “What happened next?”
This new book ‘Motocross Rider – 1977 ... The EVO Years and Beyond’ is the continuation of my story, right through to 2015. All the experiences of those early meetings of riding new tracks with varying terrain, the competitors, my good and bad finishes, the crashes and the accounts of some of the bikes that I rode (CZ 250, CZ 380, Honda CR 250 Red Rocket, YZ 250H, KTM GS350, Jawa 500 Speedway, YZ 250L, Husky CR 500 2-stroke and more. Also there’s my time in Enduro’s, having a go at Speedway and even working on a film location with the great Dave Bickers, and then back to motocross again.
Amongst my ramblings I have thrown in information of the development of the production bikes for each year and facts and figures of the 500 GP’s and the AMA Nationals to get you the reader to say, “Oh yeah ... I can remember that!”
Please do give it a look. I hope you'll enjoy the ride!
