Richard Edward Dennett was an English trader who worked out of what is today the Republic of the Congo in West Africa. He wrote extensively on the anthropology of the West Africans, including this book which recounts the folklore. This book is a key source for West African folklore and story telling.

His stories are regarding to the supernatural events especially the important evidence about "fetishes," which are both supernatural spirits and also the power of those spirits embodied in a physical object of some kind. There are also stories of human drama and family conflict and contains to animals, of the region.
