Winter sports are so huge that they have their own Olympic games, the Winter Olympics but the truth is that the average person rarely hears about any of those sports except for hockey, skiing and figure skating.

The northern hemisphere rules the world. There are hockey teams from China to Canada. There are ski resorts from Canada to southern New Zealand. Even Chile has got ski areas.

Skiing has now almost been overtaken by snowboarding on the slopes. It’s about an even split.

A lot of people cross-country ski for exercise. It’s almost like hiking.

Where I live in Canada, many rinks have public skating around noontime during the winter. The rest of the time is hockey and figure skating.

Curling is big. There is a huge curling rink near where I live but it’s kind of like a slow sport for sedentary people.

Ski School Websites

Most ski areas offer onsite instruction. Some have a formal ski school where they offer a wide range of courses to suit your interests and skill-level from beginner to ski instructor certification courses.

If you have lots of money, you can hire a private ski instructor. They are like golf-pros, often employed by the ski resort.
